Description

Frankenstein:

The gothic tale of Frankenstein and his construction of a human being who runs amok has, with the help of numerous films, become one of the most vivid of horror stories. But Mary Shelley's original novel, written in 1816, dealt more sympathetically with "the daemon", showing how an initially beneficent creature is hammered into a daemon by the way he is treated. Her ideas, and her dramatic but poignant story, is brought to life in this sound dramatisation.

Music: Tchaikovsky, Debussy

Dracula:

For a century Bram Stoker's Dracula has reigned supreme as the undisputed masterpiece of horror writing. We have all grown up under the shadow of the elegant Count, at once an attractive, brutal and erotic creature of the night. In 1897 Bram Stoker wrote a story expressing the most persistent nightmare of the human condition. Take this opportunity to dream again...

Music: Feeney, Kalinnikov, Salter/Dessau

Reviews

Film Music on the Web on Frankenstein...
“The production is commendable and features music taken from Tchaikovsky and Debussy, with the narration well performed by Daniel Philpott and Jonathan Oliver.”

Film Music on the Web on Dracula...
“What impressed me most about this wonderful realisation of this timeless story, was that it had all of the distinction and attention to detail of one of BBC Radio Four's estimable productions, with full cast, sound effects and well chosen background music. The vocal performances are accomplished too, led by the excellent Brian Cox as Van Helsing and Heathcote Williams giving a silkily menacing reading of the title character. Truthfully it's difficult to find fault with this fine production. If terror, intrigue and drama are what you seek, then look no further.”
